Cancun

Cancun is located on the eastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, on the edge of the Caribbean. Thirty years ago it was a small fishing village. Then the Mexican government, after an extensive search, decided that the area was ideally suited to be developed as a new tourist destination. Perhaps never has a government decision been so understated.

Cancun is now one of the most popular resorts in the world. The Cancun area receives 35% of Mexico's tourism revenue, and the percentage is growing. Tourists arrive daily from Asia, Latin America, Europe, Canada, the United States and Mexico. Why? Consider:

The Caribbean Sea: Intense blue colors, gentle surf, visibility in excess of 100 feet, coral reefs…and it's all framed by endless miles of white, soft sand. The area is now recognized as one of the world's best all-around dive destinations.

Archaeological Sites: The Yucatan has more archaeological sites than any other region in the Western Hemisphere. Over 1200 sites are scattered around Cancun and Merida. Two of the more popular sites are Chichen Itza and Tulum.

Hotels: An excellent variety of deluxe and world class accommodations and a number of moderately priced properties. Competition between hotels usually results in some excellent values, particularly during the off-season.

Restaurants: Cancun has over 200 restaurants, ranging from gourmet seafood, Asian, Italian, American and Mexican specialties. (There's also at least one representative of every imaginable fast food franchise.)

Nature Tours and Theme Parks: Cancun and the surrounding area have a number of interactive parks and nature tours. Visitors can swim with the dolphins, float down a river, explore archaeological ruins, observe animals in their natural habitat, and more.

Shopping: Cancun has over a dozen contemporary shopping malls. If the first one doesn't have it…

Cozumel

Cozumel is a jewel-shaped, flat-as-a-pancake island, 19 km off the Yucatan Coast and measures 48 km long and 16 km wide. Its jungle-clad interior and ivory white beaches are surrounded by the most spectacular ensembles of coral reefs in this hemisphere. Visitors reach Cozumel by way of a 45-minute ferry ride originating from Playa del Carmen. A car ferry operates out of Puerto Morelos. Both cities are south of Cancun. The majority of Cozumel's 300,000 annual visitors are now families, ecotourists, honeymooners, and Yucatan-bound visitors that find nearby Cancun a bit overwhelming.

Nature lovers come to the island to see giant sea turtles laying their eggs (May to September) and to observe the island's variety of exotic migratory bird life. Although shedding some if its "divers only" reputation, the island's diving and snorkeling are legendary. For non-divers, the island has something for everyone (in fact, only 30% of visitors are divers).

Day trippers from Cancun and cruise ship passengers sometimes overtake the city proper, only to retreat a few hours later. Cozumel really shines after this retreat, as the island's bountiful man-made and natural attractions can be leisurely explored.

Following is our list of recommended hotels in Cozumel.

Cozumel Palace is an all- suite hotel with 174 units, including 14 one- and two-bedrooms with kitchenette. Cozumel Palace offers an on-site dive center and private dock with dockside pick up for divers. There is a large pool with swim up bar. Also on site is a dive shop, massage and spa services, beauty parlor, shopping gallery and meeting rooms for up to 270. One poolside restaurant and one bar. Playa del Carmen/Riviera Maya

South of Cancun there is a region taking shape as Mexico's newest and perhaps most unique destination. Newly labeled the "Riviera Maya", its main allure is its stunning Caribbean beauty, coupled with cultural and adventure attractions. Mayan archeological sites and villages are an attractive alternative for vacationers wanting a Mexican Caribbean getaway without the crowds and clamor. The region is bursting with scenic and natural wonders, but offers little of the shopping, dining, and nightlife of Cancun or even Cozumel. It is best suited for the escapist looking for a bit of Caribbean adventure.

The main building boom, however, is at Playa del Carmen, and its swanky neighbor, Playacar. This once sleepy Caribbean outpost has become the resort hub of what promises to become Mexico's next major destination region. Playa del Carmen has easy access to Cancun's airport and hosts daily cruise ship arrivals and ferry departures to Cozumel Island. Also in Playa del Carmen is the very popular 5th Avenue. One block away from the beach, this street is mostly pedestrian walkway. International restaurants, sidewalk cafes, handicraft stores, dive shops and almost anything else a visitor could ask for are found along this avenue. At night, "fairy lights" in the trees and buildings add a bit of fantasy and escapism, leaving the vacationer wanting to do nothing more than sit and plan their next trip to Mexico.

The shoreline mixes palm-fringed beaches with grottoes and tropical coves. The world's second longest barrier reef lies just off shore, while underground rivers, cenotes, caves, and jungles abound. This is the area to go to for snorkeling and diving.

Mayan archaeological sites also pepper the region. A mixture of developed sites, such as Tulum, Xcaret, and Cobá, and unexcavated ruins make for adventurous exploration into the region's Mayan past. Tulum is a gleaming white-walled city that invites visitors to roam its small temples and buildings. Over 60 well- preserved structures can be observed within three massive walls which surround the site. On the other hand, Xcaret is a more developed site. It is part Disneyland, part zoo, part beach resort. The park combines ruins with beautiful coves, inlets, grottoes and natural wells. Visitors to Xcaret can learn about the area's ecology and Mayan history while relaxing on the beach, floating down one of two rivers, swimming with dolphins or wandering jungle-shrouded trails.

Following is our list of recommended hotels in the Playa del Carmen and Playacar region.
