Los Cabos

Los Cabos is at the southern end of Baja California, the longest peninsula in the world. Jutting out into the Pacific, it's a land of dramatic extremes: open ocean, endless beaches, surf pounding on majestic rocks, mountains, deserts, hot days and cool crystal clear nights, world class golf, and many deluxe, oceanfront resorts.

The name "Los Cabos" refers to two different communities, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Cabo San Lucas is the larger, with more shops, restaurants, bars, discos and a monopoly on the nightlife. It is also at the very tip of the peninsula, where the famous Los Arcos arch is located. San Jose is closer to the airport. It's small and quiet, with a variety of shops, several restaurants and two or three bars. The 25 miles between San Jose and Cabo has a growing number of spectacular resorts and five world-class championship golf courses.

In addition to golf, Los Cabos is known for its sport fishing. Over 40,000 marlin and sailfish are hooked every year. SCUBA diving is also excellent, probably the best on the Pacific coast of Mexico. In fact, many experienced divers prefer Los Cabos to the Caribbean. There's a good variety of sites, and there are fewer divers. Surfing can also be good, depending upon the weather, and there are several areas that are good for snorkeling.

Please note, however, Los Cabos is surrounded by open ocean. Swimming, for the average person, can be extremely dangerous. The only beach that's sheltered from the open ocean, and readily accessible, is Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas. Otherwise, enjoy the ocean, it's magnificent, but do your swimming in the pool.

Our listing of recommended hotels follows.
