Mazatlan

Mazatlan is on the mainland, directly across from the tip of Baja California, and has the best beaches of any destination on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. They are long and uninterrupted, some of the longest beaches in the entire country. They're easily accessible and walkable, ideal for families. The water is warm. The surf is generally moderate, without dangerous undertows or riptides. There are areas for surfing and boogie boards, and water sports of all kinds. And there are nearby islands with their own sandy shores to explore. If you want beaches, Mazatlan is the best, period!

Mazatlan also has the best weather on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The winter season, in particular, is fantastic, with virtually no rain from mid-October until mid-June. Daytime temperatures average 84 degrees Fahrenheit. And there's always a cool breeze off of the ocean. Ocean temperatures are rarely colder than 68 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer than 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

In addition to water sports and excellent fishing, Mazatlan has two golf courses and 100+ tennis courts, including clay and all weather. Mazatlan also has a wide variety of restaurants, from reasonably priced to deluxe. You can enjoy fresh seafood on the beach under a thatched roof or sit next to a fountain in a courtyard and experience the finest in international cuisine. You can listen to mariachis or jazz, go for a midnight swim or disco until dawn, do the wild and the crazy or the quiet and the romantic.

Also, unlike many destinations, Mazatlan is easy to figure out, even for first-time visitors. It's "user friendly". The town has a basic north to south orientation, following the shoreline. Transportation is inexpensive and it's easy to get from one end of town to the other. It's also a great town for walking, with a variety of shops, sidewalk cafes, restaurants and parks.

Following is our list of recommended hotels, which, with the exception of La Siesta, are in the "Golden Zone." This is the area that has Mazatlan's safest beaches (lack of undertoe) and most popular resorts. All the hotels are approximately 30 minutes from the airport.

Azteca Inn: Azteca Inn is a small, inexpensive hotel located in the Golden Zone across the street from the beach and Hotel Playa Mazatlan. The Azteca is an excellent compromise if you want to stretch those pesos as far as possible. You'll save some money and still have a convenient location close to the action and only minutes from the beach. The hotel is a low rise three-story building with 75 rooms, featuring colorful bedspreads and marble floors. Some rooms have adjoining doors, especially convenient for families. Most rooms face a center courtyard and a landscaped pool area. One pool. One restaurant with indoor/outdoor seating and one bar adjacent to the pool provides beverages and snacks. Air conditioning, shower only, phones, satellite TV. Click here for more photos.

Costa de Oro Beach Hotel: Costa de Oro (coast of gold) is aptly named, as it is located on a golden, sandy beach in the middle of Mazatlan's Golden Zone. Also, Costa de Oro's location in relation to the off shore islands is perfect! In addition to being picturesque, the islands offer some protection from the open ocean. And the beach has a gradual slope. The combination results in one of the most desirable beaches in all of Mexico. The hotel has a total of 292 rooms and suites. The property is divided into three separate areas. The original beach complex features 120 standard rooms, some with ocean view. North is the hotel's all suite tower featuring spacious suites with a separate bedroom area and a kitchenette, all with ocean view and balcony. There are 62 standard rooms in the tennis area, just as comfortable, but more economical because of their location. The hotel has several shops including a convenient market and pharmacy, a beachfront restaurant and the best Sports Bar in town. The pool is probably the most popular pool in Mazatlan and overlooks the ocean. Three tennis courts. Air conditioning, shower only, phones, satellite TV. Click here for more photos.
