Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is 195 miles south of Mazatlan on Bahia de Banderas, the largest bay in Mexico. The sleepy village popularized by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton is now a bustling town of 250,000 residents. Puerto Vallarta is an international destination, attracting 1.5 million annual visitors from the U.S. and Canada, as well as Asia, Europe and South America.

The climate is tropical. The city is almost literally surrounded by jungle. And beyond are the Sierra Cuale mountains, making a very picturesque setting.

The area boasts over 8,000 units of lodging, plus several thousand time share units. It offers exclusive hideaways, grand classic resorts and bargain, beachfront hotels. Every imaginable water sport is available along Vallarta's miles of sandy shore. Shopping, dining and night life are excellent. There are also some great day trips, either by boat or on land. Visits to offshore islands, remote jungle coves, snorkeling cruises and inland eco-adventures are offered by a diverse assortment of professional tour operators.

The size of Puerto Vallarta, from one end of the bay to the other, is substantial. There are basically five distinct "zones" for lodging, shopping and playing. First there is Nuevo Vallarta, an enclave of resorts and condos that is somewhat remote, north of the airport. Next is the Marina Vallarta complex, with its deluxe hotels, championship golf course, and world-class marina. Then the Hotel Zone, a parade of hotels, condos, shopping malls, and apartments between the Marina and downtown. The Downtown area, with its diverse dining, shopping and typically Mexican atmosphere, and finally the Southern Zone, a somewhat secluded area sprinkled with hillside Villas, deluxe hotels, tropical coves and fine beaches.

Taxis are inexpensive, particularly from the Marina Vallarta area to the south. Fares are standardized and consistent, making it easy to stay in one part of Puerto Vallarta and enjoy the attractions of another part of town.

Our listing of recommended hotels follows.
